Safe City: eight muggers caught on camera

2010-07-07 00:00

EIGHT suspects were arrested after a Safe City camera caught them assaulting and robbing a man in Pietermaritzburg’s CBD on Friday night.

The camera captured the incident on the corner of Langalibalele and Retief streets at about 10 pm.

The camera operator noticed two men fighting at the corner. One of them ran away and the second gave chase.

On the corner of Retief and Jabu Ndlovu streets, the man who had ran away fell and the second one began to kick him repeatedly.

“The attacker was then joined by more males who also kicked the victim.

“While assaulting him, some of the attackers then removed all his clothing and walked back towards Langalibalele and Retief streets,” said a statement from Safe City.

South Africa Police Force officers later arrested eight suspects and recovered the victim’s belongings.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan was not available yesterday evening to comment about the suspects’ court appearance.
