Safe city: two arrests from 83 incidents in CBD

2011-07-14 00:00

THE cameras of Safe City detected 83 incidents in the CBD this week, including no fewer than 25 incidents of brawling.

The crime watchdog reported 13 cases related to motor vehicle accidents, eight each for possession of stolen property and suspicious behaviour, and seven for the possession of municipal bins. The bins belong to Msunduzi Municipality and businesses. They are often used to convey stolen goods, as in the case of a man who was caught with a wheelie bin filled with about 70 litres of petrol.

The bins are also used to take recyclables to scrap merchants. In July the CCTV system picked up nine bins in the wrong hands.

Despite the high number of incidents, only two arrests were made, both for theft.

Safe City general manager Lucas Holtzhausen urged residents to report suspicious behaviour by SMSing 83 767 7223.
