Safe cycling: Maritzburg Golfers swing behind campaign

2013-02-08 00:00

The CycleSafeKZN Golf Day starts at the Maritzburg Golf Club tomorrow. The format will be a four-ball betterball Stableford for handicapped golfers, and a nine-hole Scramble will be organised for non-handicapped golfers. If you wish to sponsor a hole on the day, donate prizes or play, call Julian at 033 396 2356. The deaths of cyclists in and around KwaZulu-Natal prompted the formation of CycleSafeKZN, which was officially launched on September 22 at a memorial ride for Dr Adrian Pearce, who was killed the previous year while cycling near Pietermaritzburg. CycleSafeKZN was initiated by Pearce’s widow Bernie, Caro Smit, the director of South Africans against Drunk Driving, and Cathy Doherty-Bigara, a cycling enthusiast. The idea is to raise awareness of cycling safety and rules of the road for cyclists and motorists and engender mutual respect, leading to fewer deaths and injuries among cyclists.
