Safety campaign at taverns

2007-12-24 00:00

THE KZN Transport Department, with Gagasi FM and Ukhozi FM, launched a tavern campaign on Saturday, visiting three taverns around Pietermaritzburg, which has the highest number of people arrested for drinking and driving on weekends in KZN.

The campaign aims to show the importance of drinking responsibly when you are not at home, especially when using the road.

“This month we have lost 111 people, and we have to make sure that these numbers reduce,” said Transport MEC Bheki Cele.

Crowds in taverns silently watched a DVD showing the gruesome effects of road accidents. They were also urged to drink responsibly or be accompanied home by a sober person.

“We are going to train the tavern owners on how to use breathalyser tests so that they can help the department,” said the head of department Chris Hlabisa.

“It is our social responsibility to keep them (patrons) safe and alive,” said Skhumbuzo Madlula of Madlula’s Place.
