Sailors have fun in the rain

2008-10-30 00:00

HMYC held their Rose Bowl Regatta at Midmar in cold rainy conditions on Saturday, but the smallish fleet enjoyed a good race, despite the weather.

There were a number of Hunters competing and a Dart, a 49er skiff, a 29er skiff and the Hickman 22 keeler Dynamite.

Also racing in their own event were a very good fleet of youth sailors consisting of Lasers, Optimists and a Mirror. It was a lovely day on Sunday. One race was completed before lunch and three in the afternoon. Unfortunately, at the time of going to press results were not available.

On Saturday, line honours in the Rose Bowl were taken by the 49er skippered by Andrew Tarboton and crewed by Ant McMillan, followed by Dynamite, which was skippered by Anton Ellens. The 29er of Robert Tarboton, crewed by Robert Renton, came third.

The Hunters were dominated by Odin’s Eye sailed by Tony Cockerill and Hank Pike. On Sunday, Rob Tarboton in the 29er dominated with Dynamite close behind. It will be interesting to see how the handicaps work out to achieve final results.

On Sunday, HMYC are holding the next round in the George Duffin Trophy Series for Hunters and the Monthly Mug for all other classes on handicap. There should be a good entry of Hunters as their provincial championships are fast approaching.

Radio sailors will be in action on Saturday afternoon at HMYC when they hold their R36 Shipmate class league race. It is understood that local Commodore Des Fairbank will not be competing and crack Durban sailor Peter Simons will be the one to beat. It is hoped there will be a good turnout of local yachts. Racing starts at 2pm.
