Salaries: union, legislature reach accord

2011-07-28 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Legislature management and workers affiliated to the National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) have reached an agreement about pay increases.

Legislature spokesperson Wonder Hlongwa said the drawn-out salary negotiations, which collapsed twice, resulting in workers threatening to strike, were resolved on Tuesday afternoon with an amicable agreement.

Initially Nehawu was demanding an increase of 15% for employees in grades A1 to C5 and 12% for those in D1 to E3, with a housing allowance of R2 500.

However, said Hlongwa, after negotiations that began in May the parties have finally settled for 10% for employees in grades A1 to C5 and eight percent for grades D1 to E3, with a housing allowance of R1 760 across the board.

Deputy Speaker Mtholephi Mthimkhulu said, “I must thank both the management and union for conducting these negotiations in a mature way, which has saved the institution the threat of industrial action.”

Buyani Mdluli, Nehawu’s KZN Legislature secretary, said his members are happy with the offer.
