Sangweni in court for abuse

2014-04-24 00:00

ORLANDO Pirates star Siyabonga Sangweni has appeared in court on a charge of child abuse.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gordon Billing said Sangweni handed himself over at the Mondeor police station.

It is alleged he beat a girl over her whole body with a belt.

He was released on bail of R2 000 and the case was postponed until later in the month.

The state requested a list of his club’s forthcoming fixtures and asked him to hand over his passport.

Pirates spokesperson Mickey Modisane said the club is aware of the matter. “From the club’s side, we have heard his story and he has apologised.

“The club will investigate and issue a statement later.”

Modisane said Sangweni has not been suspended and will play against Platinum Stars at the weekend.

“Our club is opposed to the abuse of women and children,” Modisane said.
