Santana makes some strange choices

2008-11-13 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana sprung another surprise on the unsuspecting soccer media yesterday when he named a strange squad to play high riding Cameroon in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge at Rustenburg’s Olympia Park on November 19.

Santana named only three strikers in Benni McCarthy of Blackburn Rovers, Thanda Royal Zulu skipper Bernard Parker and SuperSport United’s Katlego Mphela.

The Brazilian coach failed to satisfy the media as to why the likes of Golden Arrows striker Richard Henyekane, or Israel-based Terror Fanteni, had been left out of the squad.

The good news is the return of Everton playmaker Steven Pienaar and the classy right wing Elrio van Heerden of Club Brugge in Belgium. But it is his attack where Santana needs to look long and hard at his selection.

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Chiefs), Brian Baloyi (Sundowns)

Defenders: Matthew Booth (Krylya Sovetov), Bradley Carnell (Karlsruhe), Siboniso Gaxa (Sundowns), Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Tsepo Masilela (Maccabi Haifa), Masilo Modubi (KVC Westerlo), Aaron Mokoena (Blackburn Rovers) Nasief Morris (Recreativo de Huelva), Thabo Nthethe (Celtic)

Midfielders: Lance Davids (Djurgardens), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Arrows), Thulasizwe Mbuyane, Teko Modise (Pirates), Siyabonga Nkosi (Arminia Bielefeld), Steven Pienaar (Everton), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Chiefs), Macbeth Sibaya (Rubin Kazan, Russia) Elrio van Heerden (Club Brugge)

Strikers: Benni McCarthy (Blackburn Rovers), Bernard Parker (TRZ) and Katlego Mphela (Sundowns)
