Saru announces 50 players for SA U18 Tests

2012-07-16 00:00

BREAKING with tradition, the SA Rugby Union (Saru) announced a squad of 50 players that will be involved in a training camp on July 28, before the squad is trimmed to 28 names to represent South Africa U18 in three Tests during August. The Tests will be against France, England and Wales.

With the Blue Bulls winning convincingly in the final match of Craven Week on Saturday, it is no surprise that there are 14 players from the Bulls, one of whom has been selected from the Academy Week. Of those 13 that played at Craven Week, six are from Affies, two each from Waterkloof, Centurion and Garsfontein.

Western Province, who were beaten by the Bulls on the first day, but won the other two matches, have eight players in the squad. Here there are three players from Paul Roos, with Paarl Gym and Paarl BHS each having two players selected. The Golden Lions, who lost against the Bulls in the final game and beat KZN in the second round, have six players. Three of these come from Monument and two from KES.

KZN and Boland both have four players selected. Three of those from KZN are from Kearsney, twin brothers Jean-Luc and Daniel du Preez and Sandile Kubeka, with the other, Jesse Kriel from Maritzburg College.

Other schools that have more than one representative are Outeniqua with two of three players from SWD, Grey HS in Port Elizabeth with two from EP and E.G. Jansen with both representatives from the Falcons, both being scrumhalves.

Four players were included that had played in the Academy Week. SARU’s senior manager, Nico Serfontein, in charge of development rugby at school, club and university level, said: “We have opted for a change in selection strategy, where we have exposed the selectors to a broader base of players in preparation for the upcoming Tests.” One from Limpopo, Falcons, Western Province and the Bulls Academy sides have also been included in this squad.
