Saru cave in and move the Springbok

2008-11-03 00:00

Showing little of the resolve associated with Springbok rugby, the SA Rugby Union (Saru) yesterday confirmed that it has bowed to political pressure and agreed to downplay the famous badge and add the emblem of the King Protea to the playing jersey of the national team.

The president’s council of Saru called it a compromise. Insiders said that a smaller Springbok badge will be worn on the right of the jersey with the larger Protea emblem taking its place on the left.

The decision was taken at a special president’s council meeting last week, but only confirmed yesterday. Saru president Oregan Hoskins will discuss details of the new arrangement with the minister of Sport at a meeting on November 18.

The council says that Saru remains the sole owner of the Springbok badge and that it will continue to be worn on the Bok jersey, somewhere. And the Springboks, Saru says, will remain the Springboks.
