Saru mum on new terms with Sascoc

2014-06-24 00:00

THE South African Rugby Union (Saru) is keeping quiet on the submission it made to the South African Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc).

When the submission was made in Johannesburg last week, Sascoc praised Saru for its transformation agenda and goals up to and including 2020.

One of the unanswered questions is whether there are will be certain requirements when the Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer selects his squad for the World Cup in England next year.

Saru president Oregan Hoskins recently revealed the onus is now on Meyer to select more “black Africans” in the Springbok squad.

Statistics show prop Tendai Mtawarira is the only “black African” regularly selected by Meyer since 2012.

Politicians in the past complained that black players are hidden in the Bok squads or only get a few minutes’ game time as replacements.

In 2012 Mtawarira played in nine of 12 Tests played by the Springboks, while his Sharks team-mate Lwazi Mvovo played in only two Tests.

Mtawarira was the only black player in the Bok’s starting 15 last year, when he played in 11 of the 12 Tests.

Eight coloured players played 41 Tests in 2012, while last year saw six coloured players in 36 Tests.

Akona Ndungane, the Bulls’ veteran wing, was the only black player in 2007 in Jake White’s World Cup squad, while his brother, Odwa, Mtawarira and the former Bulls hooker Chiliboy Ralepelle, were in Peter de Villiers’s World Cup squad in 2011.
