Satirical spoof of Hollywood

2008-09-05 00:00

THIS weekend’s new films are Tropic Thunder and Babylon A.D. at CineCentre; Live! at Ster Kinekor and Bachna Ae Haseeno at Nu Metro, where The Rocker also joins the line-up

Tropic Thunder is directed by Ben Stiller and stars Robert Downey Jnr, Jack Black and Stiller. Reviews have been mixed for this comedy about a group of actors who are making a big budget Vietnam war movie on location when they are taken prisoner by druglords who think they are the real deal. Ethan Coen was involved in the writing, along with Stiller, so expect black, un-PC humour and plenty of grotesques among the characters.

Babylon A.D. is directed by Mathieu Kassovitz and stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Melanie Thierry and Gerard Depardieu. A mercenary is hired to deliver a “package” — an innocent young woman raised in a monastery — from the ravages of a post-apocalyptic landscape of Eastern Europe to a destination in New York City. But a religious sect takes a special interest in the woman — who may hold the secret to humankind’s salvation.

Siddharth Anand directs Bachna Ae Haseeno, with Bipasha Basu, eepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor and Minissha Lamba. Kapoor plays a carefree alpha male and the film deals with the relationships he has with the three women in his life.

Live! is directed by Bill Guttentag and stars Eva Mendes, David Krumholtz, Eric Lively and Katie Cassidy. It is a mock documentary about reality television and the value of the two seconds of fame it can create for those involved. A TV network executive comes up with the idea for a reality show in which the contestants play Russian roulette with a loaded gun live on air.
