Saturday yacht race at Midmar ditched

2008-11-13 00:00

It was another disappointing race day on Saturday at HMYC at Midmar. Only two crews turned up for the Caruthers Jug, so race officer Geoff Scallan had to abandon the event. Saturday races have not been supported this year. The weather has had an effect but it seems that sailors prefer Sunday racing. This is possibly because these are whole day affairs, and with the high cost of petrol and the gate charges at Midmar, it is better for family members to get in a full day of activities on a Sunday.

One of the two faithful who turned out last Saturday was veteran sailor Fritz von Klemperer and his crew member Roger Eshmade. They were trying out his newly acquired Hunter 2000 “Trio” to celebrate Von Klemperer’s 91st birthday this Sunday.

It is fantastic that he should be investing in a new yacht at this time of his life and he is surely a shining example to all sailing enthusiasts.

On Saturday, HMYC are holding the Partington Plate, race three. Since it is open to all classes, it will be interesting to see how many yachts take part, and because of the handicap, everyone has a chance of winning.

It has been decided to run the Caruthers Jug in conjunction with the Partington Plate, so there will be additional silverware on offer. The skippers’ briefing will be at 1.30 pm and the race officer is Elspeth Gray.

Radio sailors will be in action at HMYC at Midmar on Saturday afternoon. They will be competing in a MRYC R36 Shipmate League Race starting at 2 pm.

The radio sailors held an evening sail last Thursday and all races except one were won by Desmond Fairbank. Keith Gerson came second, with Alex Gracie third.
