Savings: Finance MEC launches schools drive

2009-07-29 00:00

FINANCE MEC Ina Cronje yesterday taught pupils from KwaPata High School and Mthethomusha Primary School about the importance of saving. The campaign is part of the department’s initiative to get people in the province to save instead of spending.

Speaking at KwaPata High School, Cronje said: “If you want to achieve and move forward in your life, you have to save. One has to be disciplined and be able to put some money aside for that rainy day. In the face of severe economic pressure, a downturn in world markets, job losses and a recession, we need to minimise spending in order to come out of the credit crunch that could wipe out income in the absence of a savings plan. Hence, everyone should have a savings plan”.

Cronje also spoke about financial literacy, saying that pupils should make efforts to save money whether through stokvels, opening savings accounts or by putting it in savings boxes. Each pupil was given a savings box to save money at home and an information pack with all the details about saving.

After the launch, the campaign will roll out to other areas in a bid to instil the culture of saving among communities.

Speaking on behalf of the Department of Education, the senior general manager, Dr Simon Mbokazi, said the campaign is in line with the school syllabus as it forms part of life orientation subject matter. — Witness Reporter.
