S’bu Ndebele: ANC will secure 60% of provincial votes

2008-06-02 00:00

The African National Congress will secure over 60% of provincial votes in next year’s national elections. This is the bold prediction made by Premier S’bu Ndebele, who is also the chairman of the party in the province.

“This is possible if you look at the numbers they show that the ANC will emerge a winner in this province. The ANC is the only party that has over one million voters in this province,” he said.

Ndebele was speaking at the opening of the fourth regional conference of the ANC’s eThekwini region.

Ndebele added that what makes him more certain is the “shrinking support base for Inkatha Freedom Party in the province”.

“At one stage, the IFP had some 1,8 million voters, but all they have now is 800 000 voters,” he told conference delegates.

Ndebele, however, warned that the recent xenophobic attacks and incidents of racism are threatening the gains that the country has made since 1994. He called on ANC members to defend democratic principles.

New leaders of the ANC in eThekwini region were elected during the conference.

John Mchunu replaced Bheki Cele as chairman and Stanley Xulu was elected deputy chairman.

Other office bearers include Sibusiso Sibiya (regional secretary) and Nomusa Dube (the deputy secretary).
