Members of the public have been warned not to buy fundraising cards for the deaf that bear the trademark Handspeak and/or handspeak.com.
The Witness was alerted to a possible scam by reader George Fawdry, who said he was approached by a supposed deaf person at Liberty Midlands Mall, who offered him a card stating that the funds raised from its sale would be used by the seller to learn sign language.
He said the name of the website www.handspeak.com is printed boldly along the side of the card. The website carries a warning that Handspeak does not endorse the selling of these cards.
Liberty Mall centre manager Sharon Swain said people engaging in these activities are escorted off the premises.
“We do not allow it,” she said.
