School brawl: Nine arrested

2009-09-03 00:00

TWO school boys are recovering in hospital after being stabbed when a fight broke out at their school, Mgwazeni High School, on the north coast yesterday.

Nine of the alleged attackers, also pupils at the school, were arrested, but they are now at home since the case has been thrown out before they even made a court appearance.

According to Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, police officers have not been able to obtain anything tangible from the nine suspects as to what had triggered the quarrel.

“Other than the fact that one group felt that the other boys were ‘show-offs’ and felt undermined by them, there doesn’t seem to be anything tangible as to what caused the fight.”

Mdletshe said the fight occurred within the school grounds during tea break.

One boy is nursing a stab wound above the mouth, while another, a 20-year-old school boy, who was not even involved in the squabble, was stabbed twice in the back.

“They saw him walking back towards the reception area and accused him of going to report the matter to the principal. And when he denied this, they stabbed him. The boy who was stabbed in the mouth belonged to the group of boys who were being attacked.”

Mdletshe said at this stage it is not clear how many boys in total were involved in the fight, but they have established it was different age groups and grades ranging from grade 8 upwards.
