School in a fix as landlord locks gate

2013-07-17 00:00

KZN’s Department of Education has formed a task team to resolve an ongoing dispute between a landlord and his tenant — a primary school that has been closed since Monday.

The pupils and teachers at Oakford Primary School in Verulam found themselves locked out on Monday after landlord Marius Maritz allegedly locked the gates.

Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi yesterday said the task team would look at different solutions, including the expropriation of the land on which school is located.

The department last year published a notice to expropriate the land in the KZN provincial gazette.

On Monday, Maritz allegedly told pupils and teachers to use another entrance to the school, but this would have meant that pupils would have had to walk through sugar cane fields to get to class.

Mahlambi and ward councillor Nondumiso Ndlovu said no teaching and learning took place at the school yesterday. “The attitude he [Maritz] is displaying is very much not welcomed by the department,” Mahlambi said.

The department and Maritz have been at loggerheads in recent months over the leasing of the premises.

Maritz bought the land on which the primary school stands from the Roman Catholic Church.

Mahlambi alleged that Maritz wanted to charge the department an exorbitant amount for rent. When they refused the rent, Maritz said he was willing to sub-divide the land if the department paid costs.

Maritz could not be reached for comment and principal Nomthandazo Xulu declined to comment.
