School pals get knitting to save rhinos from extinction

2013-01-31 00:00

WHEN they heard about the relentless paoching of rhinos in the country, two friends, Shannon Trollip (10) and Chloe Bateson (nine), decided to do something about it.

The friends, who are in Grade 4 at Crawford North Coast, made woollen bracelets and sold them for R505, which they donated to KZN Rhino Watch.

“I feel good that I’ve raised money,” Shannon told The Witness, adding that it made her sad that rhinos could become extinct.

The idea came after the two friends went on a school trip to Tala Game Reserve and were told about what was happening to rhinos.

Shannon’s mother, Belinda Trollip, said the friends heard that rhinos were becoming extinct and they decided to do something to help.

“Her granny taught her how to knit and they decided to make bracelets out of wool,” Trollip said.

She said Shannon and Chloe made a number of bracelets and sold them to friends and at school for R5 each.

“What impressed me was that they even went on the Internet and created their own website and business cards to advertise this,” said Trollip.

She suggested it would be a great idea to give the money to KZN Rhino Watch after hearing about the organisation on East Coast Radio.

“They agreed as long as it went to rhinos.”
