School shooting: Accused pupil (15) appears in court

2014-11-14 00:00

A 15-YEAR-OLD pupil from Copesville High School appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with the shooting that claimed the life of Akhona Nakile of the Umsilinga Primary School on Wednesday afternoon.

A second teenager, Lindokuhle Thabethe, who was wounded during the incident, was reported to be in a stable condition in hospital yesterday.

The preliminary court inquiry against the alleged shooter was held behind closed doors yesterday with members of the media and the public excluded from the proceedings.

The youth faces a charge of murder and attempted murder.

The Witness was informed that the presiding magistrate has requested reports from a probation officer and a social worker that are expected to be ready by today.

The youth was remanded in custody in the interim, and will appear in court again today.

A source close to the investigation told The Witness that the teenagers were involved in a heated quarrel a while ago.

The bad blood between them was thought to be the motive for the shooting.

The youth allegedly used an unlicensed 9 mm firearm to commit the murder.

The weapon allegedly belonged to his father, who was also arrested by police and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and five rounds of ammunition following the incident.

However, when the case came to court yesterday the prosecution declined to enroll the case against the father and he was released, pending further investigations into the case.
