School sports achievements recognised at awards

2014-10-21 00:00

IT’S the time of year when many schools recognise the achievements of their pupils on the sports fields.

Numerous schools have held their annual sports awards evenings and banquets recently, where performers from all age groups stood tall, hailed for their performances at school, provincial and national levels.

Glenwood High School’s Sportsman of the Year was Andile Phehlukwayo who, at 18, is a contracted Dolphins cricketer and a member of the SA U19 side. His name has only been missing from recent Dolphins’ squads because he has to report for duty and write his matric exams.

Jaco Coetzee was the Rugby Player of the Year. The big No 8 was a strong presence in the school’s 1st team that remained unbeaten in the province this season.

Kearsney College’s Tristan Tedder and Keegan Foss shared the Sportsman of the Year accolade their all-round prowess in cricket rugby and tennis.

Tedder captained the KZN Craven Week team, was selected for the SA Schools’ squad and captained Kearsney’s 1st team. He also played cricket for the school’s 1st team and for the KZN U19 Cubs.

Foss played for the KZN U19 Coastal cricket side and Kearsney 1st team. With tennis racquet in hand, he played for the KZN U19B side and captained Kearsney’s 1st team.

Epworth had 16 pupils who had represented SA or received a top South African ranking for their sport achievements.
