School textbooks

2007-12-17 00:00

Education is the bedrock of the country’s future, so good news must be savoured. The provincial Department of Education has announced that when the new teaching year starts, 95% of schools deemed unable to run their own finances will be equipped with textbooks.

This is a truly remarkable achievement — only three years ago the figure was a dismal five percent. Much of the work in preparation for next year has already been completed, suggesting a truly commendable exercise in management and logistics. Further encouragement lies in the fact that the handful of school principals who have still not submitted their orders are to be disciplined.

This is an example of service delivery at its best. In this particular case, the beneficiaries are schoolchildren and teachers. The people of KwaZulu-Natal live in hope that these high standards will be applied to all sectors of society.
