Schoolboy banned for racist rant

2013-06-27 00:00

STELLENBOSCH — A pupil at the Paarl Gymnasium has been banned from playing rugby for the rest of the season after he was found guilty of making racist remarks during a match against Wynberg Boys’ High on June 1.

A joint statement by the schools said the remarks were made during an U16B match.

Mike Engelbrecht, head of rugby at Wynberg, yesterday said his players had informed him that the offending player had made racist comments and used the k-word.

An independent disciplinary hearing was held on June 20, as decided by the governing body of Gymnasium, the statement read.

The committee comprised a former judge, an independent high school principal and a practising attorney.

The statement said a pupil from Paarl Gymnasium was found guilty of misconduct and the committee had decided to ban the pupil from playing rugby for the rest of the 2013 season.

If the pupil makes himself guilty of similar misconduct in future, it could have “serious consequences for the continuation of his career at the school”, the statement read.

The principals of both schools — Eddie Bateman (Gymnasium) and Keith Richardson (Wynberg) — expressed their satisfaction with the manner in which the case was handled.

They requested that the matter be seen as closed and said they look forward to continue building on the good relationship that exists between the schools.
