Schoolboy hockey interest centres on the clash between DHS and unbeaten Kearsney

2008-06-06 00:00

A full round of fixtures is scheduled today with interest focused on DHS hosting unbeaten Kearsney.

Kearsney’s run is likely to continue against their Durban hosts who have lost slightly more games than they have won. However, DHS have shown improved form in their last three matches when they beat both Northwood and College and drew with Glenwood.

If their defence holds the Kearsney attack, then a close match could transpire. Kick-off is at 11 am.

Maritzburg College travel up the hill to play Hilton on the Beckingham turf (11.45 am). Hilton will be intent on reversing the result from two weeks ago when they lost 2-4.

Hilton have had a better season than College. They beat Michaelhouse, while College drew. Against KES, Hilton drew and College lost, while both have beaten Northwood with Hilton winning 9-0 and College by six goals. Hilton also had a 6-2 win against DHS and College surprisingly lost 1-3. With home ground advantage, Hilton must be favourites despite the earlier loss.

Michaelhouse host Glenwood on Aitkens (11.15 am). The hosts have had a strange season, as they were expected to be the side to beat this year, but they have lacked goals.

Glenwood are a much improved side this year and, of the matches played, it was only against Maritzburg College that there was a big discrepancy between the two results. Glenwood lost 5-0 against College, while Michaelhouse drew.

Northwood host St Charles (10.30 am on the Riverside turf) and the match could be very tightly contested. At this stage of the season they have surprisingly only played one common school, Kearsney. St Charles lost 2-1 win and Northwood lost 1-5.

Northwood have played 12 matches, losing the majority. St Charles have also played 12, but have won and drawn slightly more. It is the last few games that will give them more confidence as they have held stronger sides to close results.

Westville travel to play KES in Johannesburg. Their hosts have been one of the more successful Gauteng teams this year and it is likely that Westville will struggle.

Fixtures (home side first): DHS vs Kearsney; Hilton vs Maritzburg College; Michaelhouse vs Glenwood; Northwood vs St Charles; KES vs Westville.
