Schoolgirl sweeps double win at ProShop

2008-04-22 00:00

Sixteen-year-old schoolgirl Bertine Strauss of Rustenburg swept all before her as she became the toast of KZN women’s golf by yesterday adding the ProShop KZN matchplay title to the 36-holes strokeplay championship she won on Sunday.

Strauss beat Kim Williams of Centurion three and two in the 18-holes final at the Victoria Country Club yesterday to complete her excellent double in fine style. She had a spirited semi-final match against Ashleigh Holmes of Plettenberg Bay earlier in the morning that went to the last hole before ending in triumph after Holmes hit her final tee shot out of bounds.

Up to then it had been a grand struggle between the two, who revelled in the best weather conditions of the championship with sunshine and warmth instead of the rain and cold of the first two days.

Strauss, who has thus won her first major provincial title, was delighted, but all she could say at the end was a giggly "yup".

In the match against Holmes, the teenager said her game was not quite up to scratch, but that she improved in the final against Williams with her short game, notably her chipping, on target and she sank the putts that counted most.

In the morning match against Holmes, Strauss trailed by two holes at first, then made up ground and going into the final two holes she was one down. But she came right by taking both the 17th and the 18th for her eventual win that carried her into the afternoon final against Williams.

The other semi-final was an anti-climax. Jenna Schonfeld, of Glendower, could not alter her flight times and was forced to withdraw, giving Kim Williams a walkover.

The Silver Division Final was won by Terri Holloway of Kloof, who beat Debbie Kroukamp-Pradl five and four in the final and the Bronze Division final went to Sammy Moodley of Royal Durban, who also gained a last hole victory against Gill Lonsdale of the home club Victoria.
