Schools challenge: Alex to go up against College in semi-finals

2013-04-23 00:00

THE Nashua Maritzburg United Midlands School Soccer Challenge has reached the semi-finals stage with the eight participating schools concluding their two legged quarter-finals matchups last week.

Alex High and Sobantu Secondary played out to a 0-0 draw in the second leg of their quarter-final.

Alex, who had earned a 2-1 lead from the first leg, booked their place among the four remaining sides looking to secure a May 11 final that will be played as the curtain raiser to the Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town PSL clash at Harry Gwala Stadium.

Their opponents in the semi-

finals will be Maritzburg College, who repeated their 2-1 victory from the first leg over Carter High School in last week’s second leg to go through 4-2 on aggregate.

Haythorne will be expected to struggle against Edendale’s Mehlokazulu in the other semi-final, while both Alex and College have been impressive enough to suggest that theirs will be the pick of the semi-finals.

As was the case in the quarter-finals, the semi-finals will be played over two legs where the away goals rule will be applied, despite all matches taking place at Harry Gwala Stadium.
