Schools’ cricket festivals hampered by rain

2008-01-08 00:00

HE Maritzburg College Festival started yesterday but, because of the rain, games started late and the match against Clifton on Sunday was cancelled. The Alexandra Festival starts today and the KKS Independent School’s Festival hosted by Michaelhouse begins tomorrow.

The Alex Festival, in its 28th year, has 12 sides participating. Visitors from outside the province include The Glen and Waterkloof II from Pretoria and Hudson Park II and Stirling from East London.

Local schools playing are the hosts Alexandra, Voortrekker, Carter, Wartburg, Treverton, Howick and Maritzburg Christian School. To make up the 12th side a Colts team from Standard Cricket Club is also involved.

This festival is over four days ending on Friday, although Waterkloof II had their first match yesterday against the Colts XI. Treverton and MCS appear to have the most experience of the KZN sides playing, with seven 7 players who are back from last year’s teams.

The Festival at Michaelhouse involves the top four Independent Schools in the province, the hosts Michaelhouse, Hilton College, Kearsney and St Charles. Their opponents see two overseas schools, St Pauls Collegiate from New Zealand and Anglican Church Grammar School from Australia. Peterhouse from Zimbabwe and Bishops from Cape Town complete the opposition.

Like the College Festival, the Independent Festival is also over three days. College finish tomorrow, while they finish on Friday at Michaelhouse.

The first day of the Maritzburg College Cricket Festival was badly affected by rain, with only one match managing to reach a result. Two other matches saw one side batting, although the matches started late and the fourth game didn’t even get started. This was between Hudson Park and Westville.

One century was scored by Dominic Hendricks, St Davids captain, who made good use of a life that he was given before he had opened his score by a Clifton slip fielder. He went on to score 112 not out in their total of 245 for 3. Clifton could only manage 110 in reply.

The best bowling on the day was by Jarred Kuiper of St Johns, who captured 4 wickets for 30 in 9 overs against Glenwood.

Scores in brief:

St Davids 245-3 (Hendricks 112*, Arp 40, Rissik 45)

Clifton 110 (Pillai 27, Smith 3/29)

St Davids won by 135 runs

Glenwood 139 (Bux 28, Chetty 38, Kuiper 4/30)
