Schools gear up for Twenty20

2011-11-08 00:00

THE third annual national schools Twenty20 competition is in its early rounds around the country.

Previously sponsored by Standard Bank, Cricket South Africa has taken on the organisation this year and Niels Momberg of CSA is confident that a new sponsor will come on board.

Waterkloof, playing for the Titans, has now won two years in succession, this year beating Noordkaap from the Knights, in the finals. These are the new kids on the block in schools cricket with the more established schools such as Maritzburg College, which has represented the Dolphins in both years and were runners-up in the first year against Menlopark, King Edward VII School which has represented the Lions in the two previous tournaments and Grey High School from Port Elizabeth, which represented the Warriors for two years, taking second place.

The regional stages in KZN are treated slightly differently. In the Coastals region the top schools are currently playing the smaller schools during the early rounds. In the Inland region the four top schools, Maritzburg College, St Charles, Michaelhouse and Hilton, will play the winners from the pools where the smaller schools are playing. The two regional finals will be played on January 18.

The provincial final between Coastals and Inland will be played at the Pietermaritzburg Oval on a date still to be confirmed.

The winner will then represent the Dolphins in the national finals in Potchefstroom in February 2012. Earlier this year Maritzburg College beat Kearsney at Kingsmead in the provincial final.
