Schools relay league starts today

2010-08-20 00:00

THERE is a full weekend of athletics locally, starting with the second of the schools relay league at King’s Park Stadium at 3 pm today.

The relays are run by teams of eight over a multiple of distances from 100 m to 800 m.

It’s back to King’s Park tomorrow morning at 8.30 am for the first sub-youth and primary schools league, which caters for all primary school athletes from ages seven to 15.

Athletes, coaches and parents are reminded that to be eligible to take part in the KZN Sub-Youth Championships in October, all athletes must compete in at least two leagues.

Information on both track events is available from the KZNA offices at 031 312 9374 or log on to

The Merewent 10 km on Sunday is the focal road race for the weekend, but the host club has been thrown a curved ball by the municipality, which has put its weight behind a 150 km cycle race around the Bluff.

Despite having applied for and received approval for the road race in June, the club has been forced into a last-minute redesign of the race route in order to maintain its 7 am start time.

This has resulted in a hillier course, but runners can still expect to experience the quality and hospitality that the club is known for.

The event is open to runners and walkers. Pat Pather has more details at 083 739 1248.

Also on Sunday, the Genius club of uMzimkhulu in the south of the province is the host of the Corridor Half-marathon and 10 km run and walk.

There are cash prizes for the top 10 half-marathoners and top five in the 10 km, while all finishers receive medals and T-shirts. The race starts at 7 am and offers a five kilometre fun-run for the less ambitious. Themba Gumede has more details at 072 844 0734.

The Township to Township Marathon was also scheduled for Sunday, but this has been postponed to the October 24.

Sihle Shange has more details of the changes at 073 470 9842.
