Schools’ soccer: Wins for St Charles, College, Alexandra and Westville

2011-09-06 00:00

SCHOOL soccer appears to be the one sport where the smaller schools can hold their own against the bigger schools and cause an upset every now and again. Westville and DHS have done and continue to do well.

Michaelhouse 0 St Charles 1

St Charles did well to defeat Michaelhouse away from home, scoring the only goal of the game. Before half-time, neither side had been able to score and it took St Charles another 20 minutes before they found the back of the net.

Changing their tactics by spreading the ball, St Charles created more opportunities by getting behind the defence and Bradley Fotabong scored for the 1-0 win. Warwick Dukes in the St Charles goal had made some good saves to prevent the home side scoring.

Maritzburg College 4 Hilton 0

Maritzburg College played a hard physical encounter with Hilton who had some giants in the team. Keeping the ball low worked in the College favour as the first two goals came with players weaving their way up the centre of the field.

Hilton were more competitive in the second half but after being down 0-3 at the break, conceded a further goal and were kept out by some resolute College defence. Andile Shandu scored a brace with the other two goals going to Andiswe Mncwabe and Phiweya Hlope.

Alexandra 1 Maritzburg College 0

The game at Alex was marred by a situation where the referee had no linesmen and the field was not marked correctly. College dominated possession but could not score. The Alex goal came from a player in an offside position and with the referee way behind play, the goal was allowed.

College did not make enough use of the ball that they had and full marks to Alex for scoring with the scraps that they had.

other games

Westville was too good for Kearsney, scoring four goals and conceding one.

Earlier in the week, Westville beat Michaelhouse 2-1. It was a great game at DHS where they held on to beat Kearsney 3-2.

OTHER RESULTS: Northwood 2 Glenwood 1; Kloof 2 Kingsway 2; Hillcrest 4 Crawford LL 4.
