Schuster, Mandela movie light up SA box office

2014-01-09 00:00

LEON Schuster’s latest comedy and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom were among the top 10 films at the South African box office in 2013.

This is despite the fact that both were only released at the end of November. Top performing films usually spend two months in theatres and the most popular, up to 14 weeks, which makes the performance of Schuks! Your Country Needs You and Mandela even more remarkable.

The Mandela film has just opened in Britain and Ireland and was among the top 10 films in that market in its first week. Producer Anant Singh said UK critical reaction has been good and the film has opened better than other biopics like Ali and The Last King Of Scotland.

Its star, Idris Elba, has been nominated for a Golden Globe as Best Actor. The awards will be handed out in Hollywood on Sunday. — Media24.
