Scores to settle as season draws to a close

2010-06-05 00:00

THE schools’ hockey season plays to a close today with only four top games. Northwood’s season came to an end last week and Westville will be playing Thomas More, a side that does not normally play in the top league.

Hilton will be hosting Michaelhouse in a return fixture after they won the first encounter 3-2, played before Easter. Michaelhouse is usually better at home on their slightly slower surface and the fact that Hilton won on Aitken’s, must make them favourites at home in front of a crowd bigger than normal

However, it is both schools’ most important derby match and, for the senior players, the last game in their school colours. This creates added pressure which can affect the more emotionally inclined and often it is the underdog that will come out victorious.

Another return fixture is between Maritzburg College and Glenwood. The first game at Glenwood was won 3-1 by College, where the latter could have triumphed by more as they dominated possession. At home and in front of many Old Boys who will have represented College in the past, the team will hope to do better than their first game.

Glenwood, however, have been solid at the back, with goalkeeper Alex van der Merwe selected for the KZN Coastal Under 18 team. Thus, to score more goals, College will have to be steady in the midfield and remain composed.

The match between home side DHS and Kearsney should go the way of the Botha’s Hill team. The best results DHS has had are draws against Glenwood and Hilton, whereas Kearsney has only had two losses against College and Northwood.

Clifton certainly gained plenty of experience on their overseas tour, and against the major hockey schools in the province they have held their own and have not gone down by more than one goal. They travel to the capital to play St Charles, a side that has shown an upward curve this season. It should be a good challenge for the home side.

Fixtures (home side first): Hilton v Michaelhouse; Maritzburg College v Glenwood; DHS v Kearsney; St Charles v Clifton; Westville v Thomas More
