Scottburgh: Pensioner's rapist gets life

2009-10-01 00:00

A MAN who in April this year broke into the home of a 74-year-old pensioner and raped her, smothering her with a pillow and causing her to lose consciousness, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a regional court magistrate in Scottburgh, police said yesterday.

Captain Vincent Pandarum said the rapist, Sabelo Mxolosi Zondo (26), was further sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Zondo was arrested after the investigating officer, Inspector Yugen Moodley, circulated a photograph of him and appealed to the public for help in locating him.

He was spotted in Park Rynie and police were alerted.

Pandarum said the case was an example of how the community and police can work in partnership to rid the streets of criminals.

The victim was asleep on Monday, April 6, when Zondo gained entry by breaking through a balcony window and forcing open the burglar guards.
