Scottsville man charges police with poor service

A Pietermaritzburg resident has laid a complaint against the police for their slow response after his vehicles were broken into twice in less than three days.

Keith van der Merwe laid a complaint against Alexandra Road police station officers for failing to react promptly to his call at his house in Scottsville.

On Sunday, Van der Merwe’s three vehicles were broken into and tool boxes were stolen.

At the police station, he was told there were no cars to respond to his call. “I was told that there were not enough vehicles and that some had broken down. There were vehicles parked outside and some officers were sitting inside a double-cab bakkie with its engine running,” he said.

On Monday, he laid a complaint against the police.

On Tuesday, Van der Merwe found his bakkie placed on rocks and its wheels stolen.

“I parked my bakkie at 4.30 am and went inside … When I returned at 6 am, it was standing on the rocks … ” he said.

Van der Merwe said he phoned the police at 6 am, but they only arrived at 6.45 am.

SAPS spokesman Henry Budhram said the allegations will be investigated.

“The SAPS is obliged to serve the public and no excuses will be tolerated … A departmental investigation has been instituted on the allegations pertaining to the late arrival of the police.”
