Season gets off to explosive start

THERE can surely be no better way to launch the new KZN club rugby season than to feature all eight Moor Cup Premier Division teams at one venue on the same day.

And so it proved, with the Fidelity Security Club Rugby Launch Day taking place on Saturday at King’s Park.

The surprise performance was premier division newcomers Amanzimtoti beating UKZN Maritzburg 40-7, which enabled the south coasters to come out of the clash with maximum points.

The fancied Varsity College had to work hard to withstand the challenge of Maritzburg Collegians. Turning around with a slender two-point lead, Varsity College took the score from 12-10 to 31-10 by the final whistle, collecting five tries and maximum log points in the process.

In what was the most anticipated match, Durban Collegians were somewhat flattered by the 26-3 scoreline against a gutsy Crusaders line-up that deserved a better final result.

With Collegians just 5-3 ahead at the break, it was anyone’s game, and despite losing two players to the sin-bin, ’Saders stuck to their guns and could well have taken the lead. However, the supreme effort from the ’Saders lads was undone at the death when three quick Collegians tries gave the final score its deceptively wide margin.

The powerful College Rovers, boasting an enviable reservoir of quality club players, were able to choose a team who were not their best and still come away with an emphatic 50-3 win over Zululand Rhinos.
