Second cocaine haul found at sea

2013-12-30 00:00

GEORGE — A second large sports bag, packed with one-kilgram plastic bags filled with a white powder, was found floating in the waves near Mossel Bay on Saturday.

On Thursday a bag filled with what police suspect is cocaine with a street value estimated at R8,7 million, washed up at Hartenbos beach.

Both sports bags had been tied to blue drums that acted as floats.

A reader sent in a photo of police taking the bag ashore at the Mossel Bay Yacht Club at about 10 am on Saturday.

South Cape police spokesperson Captain Bernadine Steyn yesterday said a swimmer informed the Mossel Bay police at about 8.45 am on Saturday that a blue object was floating in the sea at Pinnacle Point at Mossel Bay.

The police investigated and found a blue drum to which a black bag had been tied.

The bag contained 25 vacuum-packed packets weighing about one kilogram each and filled with what police suspect to be cocaine.

Steyn said the powder from the second bag will also be sent to a laboratory in Cape Town to be tested.

She stressed that the investigation about the mystery bags full of suspected cocaine was at an early stage.

It was too early to speculate if the floating drums and bags had been dropped by a ship.
