Second loss in a row for reigning champs Varsity after Zingari win

2009-03-16 00:00

ZINGARI caused a major upset when they beat reigning KZN Inland Premier 60 champions Varsity by a comfortable six wickets on Sunday.

This meant Varsity suffered their second upset defeat in as many weeks after a stunning victory by Young Natalians over the campus-based club in the MCA Premier 50 the week before.

The result leaves title challengers Standard almost certain to win the Premier 60 title, as they are now 13 points ahead of Varsity. Standard will then qualify to take on the South Western Districts club champions in George at season end for the right to participate in National Club Champs at the beginning of next season.

Zingari and KZN Inland seam bowler Richard Hlela, arguably the most improved player of the season, did most of the damage with the ball as Varsity were dismissed for 145 in just 40 overs, while Jason Kleyweg and Gareth Brown carried the day with the bat for the winners.

Standard also lead the MCA Premier 50 race and look well on course to win the coveted double.

Meanwhile, the Friday night KFC Inland Twenty20 Series sees Varsity and Zingari leading the Blue Group, with Varsity II and Standard on top in the Green Group.
