Security beefed up at KZN malls

ALTHOUGH shopping malls and police in Pietermaritzburg and Durban have heightened security efforts, patrons have been urged to do their bit by safeguarding their children, while also keeping a close watch on their vehicles and valuables.

The Witness reported earlier this week that about 50 foot patrol officers and police in vehicles, bicycles and horseback will be visible at various Pietermaritzburg shopping centres during the festive season.

The Pavilion Shopping Centre, Liberty Midlands Mall and Gateway Theatre of Shopping told The Witness that various measures have been put in place to enhance the safety of shoppers.

“… A request has been put forward to the SA Police Force for more visibility on the premises. We also have CCTV surveillance being utilised and monitored at all times. Security officers also patrol our site on Segways,” Liberty Midlands Mall management told The Witness.

The mall said security shifts have been adjusted accordingly during the festive period, adding that patrons should report any suspicious activity to the nearest security in the centre or call the control room at 033 342 4892 or 033 341 9576.

General manager of The Pavilion Nobubele Ncube said they will conduct random patrols and helicopter landings with police patrolling high risk areas.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping Centre manager Adrian Raw said measures have been taken to increase security personnel, while also liaising with the police to negotiate a positive police presence.
