Security guard delivering firearms held up by armed robbers

2011-09-01 00:00

A SECURITY guard, who was delivering firearms to fellow security guards on shift at Hazelmere Dam, Verulam, was held up by three armed men yesterday morning.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the guard, who does not want to be named, was blocked by a black VW Polo and its two occupants held him up at gun point.

They forced him into the back seat of his company Toyota Tazz and drove him towards Dalton.

Zwane said the men took three firearms, the victim’s firearm and his cellphone and left him in a sugar cane plantation in the Dalton area.

The victim walked to the main road and found help from passing motorists, who contacted the security company.

The company vehicle was later found by Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) in sugar cane plantations between Wartburg and Greytown yesterday.

RUSA pilot Prem Balram said they were called by Enforce Security for assistance.

A search for the suspects was fruitless and no arrests have been made, he said.

A woman who would not identify herself said the company (Enforce) has no comment on the matter.

Captain Zwane said police are investigating cases of kidnapping and armed robbery.
