Selection policy document tells a story

2008-02-13 00:00

AN indication of the ambiguity in the SA cricket selection process for the Proteas team can be found in the selection policy sent to the media by Cricket South Africa’s media liaison man Michael Owen-Smith at the weekend.

It appears that Owen-Smith was endeavouring to clarify matters surrounding the selection furore between Proteas coach Mickey Arthur and CSA president Norman Arendse.

It is an exact extract from the minutes of a CSA management committee meeting held on August 31 last year in a conference room at Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Apart from Manco members, including Arendse, others in attendance were SA coach Arthur, Proteas skipper Graeme Smith and convenor of selectors Joubert Strydom.

Aspects of item two, “Selection Policy”, outline the official guidelines for the national selectors — and its obvious contradictions:

• The best available team should be selected.

• CSA want the Proteas to be world number one.

• Teams must reflect the diversity of the South African nation and the people who play cricket in South Africa.

• Those selected must be there on pure ability.

• No policy is cast in stone — targets are set and can be changed if the motivation is accepted by the president

• There are no quotas.

It is clear from the guidelines that some of them are mutually exclusive. Little wonder that selectors — and president Arendse — get their wires crossed.
