Selfless computer whiz wins award

THE contribution to his community by philanthropic computer whiz Thami Buthelezi has not gone unnoticed.

Last week the 21-year-old businessman in Pietermartizburg received the KZN Young Achiever award in the technology category at a ceremony held in the Durban City Hall.

“Although I am very happy about the award, I just feel that I don’t deserve it. It is not about me and it belongs to the lives I change,” he said.

Buthelezi was nominated and submitted his portfolio.

He said he first learnt to use a computer when he was eight years old and wanted to pass his knowledge to others.

He is very passionate about teaching young children from townships and rural areas about technology and its importance.

“I have realised that kids from these backgrounds don’t really know how to use computers and therefore struggle in varsity. That’s why I decided to give them computer lessons.”

Buthelezi started giving lessons early this year and teaches about 20 children every month, and he does it all for free. “I know how important technology is. I want communities to grow and believe that our lives are being changed by technology,” said an enthusiastic Buthelezi.

At first, he felt that people didn’t take him seriously because of his age. But things had changed, he said, and he had managed to prove himself to those who doubted him.

He said people were taking him seriously and approaching him for lessons.

His big plan was to make sure that as many people as possible in rural areas and townships become computer literate.
