Selfless work

2009-01-21 00:00

Among tributes paid to Yvonne Spain on Monday at a farewell party given for her as outgoing director of the Children in Distress Network (Cindi), was one noting that because of her work and dedication, KwaZulu-Natal had become a province known for the excellence of its help for children in need. Although Spain leaves Cindi, she’ll be starting a new NGO to benefit sick children from rural areas.

It’s good to honour and thank those who, for little or no monetary reward, put so much into the operation and daily running of NGOs whose aim is the betterment of society. Some, as do Cindi, Hospice, the SPCA and the Gift of the Givers Foundation, feature in the news fairly often and their work is widely known. But there are others, less prominent, which do extraordinary work in various communities. We’ve reason to be grateful to them all.
