Senior traffic cop kills teen chasing ball into road

2008-05-13 00:00

AN accident in which a vehicle driven by a senior Msunduzi Municipality traffic department superintendent hit and killed a 15-year-old boy yesterday afternoon was one of two serious accidents in less than 24 hours on the Richmond Road near Fox Hill.

The name of the deceased boy and those of victims of the earlier accident have not been released.

Traffic department spokesman Kenneth Chetty said boys were playing soccer near the France low-cost housing area. One of them chased the ball on to the busy road, which is a 80 km/h zone, and was hit by the superintendent’s vehicle. The senior traffic official cannot be named as no charges have been laid against him yet.

Chetty said an investigation into the accident is under way.

That accident followed another one that happened in the same area, at the intersection of Richmond and White roads, in which a driver was killed on Monday evening. His VW Polo Classic collided with a BMW occupied by a family, including a five-year-old girl and seven-year-old boy.

The girl was taken to Chief Albert Luthuli Hospital in Durban in a critical condition, while the boy and parents were taken to Edendale Hospital in serious condition.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said all the injured are still in the same condition.
