Sentence today for baby killer

A MAN who admitted that he killed his ex-girlfriend’s 10-month-old baby boy in a fit of jealousy by hitting the child against a wall, is to be sentenced in the high court in Pietermaritzburg today.

Mduduzi Sphamandla Mpanza pleaded guilty before Judge Rishi Seegobin yesterday to the murder of Philasande Sabelo Mbuli at Msingazi Reserve in Richards Bay on February 1.

He said the baby was the child of his ex-girlfriend, Nonhlanhla Mbuli.

“Although Nonhlanla and I were no longer in a love relationship, we were engaged in a sexual affair and she led me to believe that we were going to reconcile as a couple,” he said in a written statement read by his legal aid lawyer, Ishi Khan.

Mpanza said that on February 1 he had been drinking and then went to visit Nonhlanhla, but was told she had gone out with the father of the child.

Overcome by anger and jealousy, he tried to assault the woman looking after the baby, but she fled, leaving the boy.

Still enraged, he grabbed the child and hit him against the wall. Mpanza said afterwards he carried the baby to a neighbour’s house where he realised the child was dead and the police were summoned.
