Sentencing in Richmond farm triple murder postponed

2014-04-23 00:00

THE killers of Richmond farmer Ekard Schutte (76), his wife, Elizabeth (66), and son, Lutz (33), appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday to be told that sentencing in their case had been postponed to May 19.

The court was told by state advocate Candy Kander the reason was that pre-sentencing reports required in respect of one of the accused who is a juvenile, had not been finalised.

The three accused, one of whom had worked for the Schuttes, pleaded guilty to the family’s murder last month.

Zamokhule Maduna (19), Siphesihle Ngubane (20) and the 17-year-old youth described in statements to the court how each family member was overpowered and stabbed to death on March 1 in order to facilitate a robbery at the farm.

Ekard was killed first after being lured to an outbuilding on a pretext that the killers wanted to buy planks of wood from him. The trio thereafter lay in wait for Elizabeth Schutte who had gone to the airport to meet the couple’s son, Lutz, who flew in from Germany for his father’s planned birthday celebration.

When mother and son entered the house they were overpowered by the killers. Lutz was murdered first.

The killers bound and gagged his mother with duct tape, and after forcing her to open the safe for them, they cut her throat.

The bodies of all three victims were doused with petrol and set alight before the killers fled.
