Serero could still feature for Bafana

CAPE TOWN — Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund says midfielder Thulani Serero would still be considered for the national team in future despite last week’s disciplinary saga.

Serero was dismissed from the Bafana camp on Friday night ahead of their 2014 Soccer World Cup qualifier against Botswana in Durban after his commitment was questioned.

The former PSL Footballer of the Year was reportedly worried about getting injured ahead of his club Ajax Amsterdam’s opening Champions League clash against Barcelona next week.

According to the Football411 website, Igesund dismissed claims that the Bafana technical team said Serero faked an injury as an excuse to miss the game. “One thing I can say is that Thulani never faked an injury and we never said he faked an injury,” Igesund said. “He said to me very clearly that he is not injured, but he is scared to get injured and he’s got a big game coming up. I read somewhere in the paper or someone saying ‘Igesund is a liar’ — that means my whole squad are liars.”

Bafana gave the Zebras a 4-1 humbling but failed to qualify for the World Cup.
