Serial rapist gets four life terms

2015-02-04 00:00

A MAN who committed a series of rapes and robberies while on parole was sentenced to four life terms and an additional 190 years’ imprisonment by the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court on Monday.

Sibusiso Emmanuel Zondi (37), from Pietermaritzburg, committed the crimes shortly after being released on parole in 2012, for a previous conviction for robbery in 2008.

In all the incidents, Zondi approached the victim as if he knew her and lured her to a secluded spot where he raped and robbed her of her belongings.

In one particular incident where the complainants (a male and female) were schoolmates, Zondi forced the two to have sexual intercourse by threatening them with a firearm.

In her victim impact statement to the court, one complainant said: “When he raped me he never just took my body but he took my pride as a woman. He took my confidence in all, he broke me into a million pieces, he ripped a piece of me that I will never be able to get back.”

Another complainant said: “Being a victim of rape has been torture to me and I think it will carry on for the rest of my life.”

Regional court prosecutor Mariam Aboobaker argued that Zondi did not deserve leniency because he was released on parole in December 2012 and started his criminal activities a month later in January 2013.

He had been serving time for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Added to the sentence of four life terms and 190 years, the court further ordered that Zondi would serve 25 years before he is considered for any parole.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) Regional communications manager Natasha Kara said they welcomed the sentence.

“We trust this will serve as a severe warning,” she said in a media statement.
