Serious crimes on the increase in KwaZulu-Natal

SERIOUS crimes such as murder and sexual crimes have increased in KwaZulu-Natal in 2008/9.

Murders increased from 4 702 last year to 4 747 and sexual crimes from 11 355 to 13 279, while robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 24 278 to 25 856.

Home burglaries, which had decreased since 2004/2005, increased from 37 083 to 37 650.

Other crimes that have been steadily increasing over the years include carjacking, up from 3889 to 4 062; home robberies, up from 3 479 to 4 601; and business robberies, up from 1 923 to 2 499.

Neglect and ill-treatment of children increased from 448 to 490.

The rates of some serious crimes, however, decreased in the province. These included attempted murder, assault with attempt to inflict grievous bodily harm, common robbery and kidnapping.

Murder: 133 (130), Attempted murder: 61 (50), Assault with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm: 604 (522), Common assault: 1258 (969), Robbery with aggravating circumstances: 327 (320), Arson: 21 (9), Business burglary: 116 (96), Home burglary 711 (666), Carjackings 43 (24), Neglect and ill treatment of children 21 (11).

Business burglaries 49 (57), Home burglaries at residential premises: 520 (618).
