SEVEN people died and 39 others were injured in accidents on the province’s roads this weekend.

André Visser, ER24 spokesperson, said one person died and 24 people were seriously injured on the Edendale Road on Saturday night when a passenger vehicle allegedly crossed the centre divider and collided head-on with two minibus taxis.

“After the initial collision another minibus taxi and a single passenger vehicle collided with the rear of the minibus taxis, bringing the total of vehicles involved in the collision to five.”

Specialised equipment was used to extricate four occupants of one minibus taxi and an occupant of the car.

Attempts to clear the scene of a pile-up were hampered by the severe storm that struck the city.

A good Samaritan died on the M7 when he stopped his vehicle to help the driver of another car and a bakkie smashed into both vehicles. The accident happened near the Moore Road off-ramp early yesterday morning, said Chris Botha of Netcare 911.

Two occupants in the bakkie sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital.

On the N3 at Estcourt Ultra City on Saturday night three people died when the car they were travelling in allegedly rear-ended a truck. Transport Department spokes person Zinhle Mngomezulu said the three were Ladysmith residents travelling from Durban.

On the N2 at Nyoni on Saturday night a bakkie lost control and hit a minibus after a tyre burst. Two people died and 13 were seriously injured. — WR.
