Seven injured in three-taxi collision

AN accident involving three mini-bus taxis left seven people injured — three of them critical — in Edendale Road yesterday afternoon.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said the taxis rear-ended each other after one of them allegedly stopped in the middle of the road, leading to the other two crashing into each other.

Wet weather was also suspected to have contributed to the accident.

In an earlier incident, a man was trapped inside a minibus taxi when it slammed into the back of a delivery truck in Church Street during morning rush hour.

City fire fighters and Netcare 911 paramedics had to use the Jaws of Life and hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate the man from the taxi. Emergency personnel worked more than 45 minutes to free the man from the twisted metal. Four other people were also injured.

Near Durban, three police officers were injured when their minibus collided with a stationary bakkie on Mangosuthu Highway in Umlazi early yesterday.

One of the officers, who was seated in the front seat, was trapped in the crumpled cabin of the minibus.

eThekwini Metro fire fighters used hydraulic rams to release the passenger’s legs from the dashboard.

The wet weather conditions are believed to have played a part in the accident.

It is understood that the driver of the police vehicle failed to stop and crashed into the back of the bakkie.
